1. Treating AI security like software security
Traditional security controls assume a static, defined system boundary. AI systems are probabilistic and opaque. You cannot audit a neural network the way you audit a codebase. Guardrails fail silently. Models hallucinate plausible misinformation. You need different control mechanisms: data lineage tracking, output validation protocols, and continuous monitoring for model drift and adversarial attacks.
2. Assuming the cloud vendor handles compliance for you
Every major cloud AI service claims to be enterprise-grade and secure. What they do not say: they reserve the right to use your training data to improve their models. Your sensitive payroll data, customer records, or classified briefings could be feeding competitive intelligence systems you do not control. Check your contracts. Most organisations never do.
3. Ignoring the integration layer
AI systems do not live in isolation. They connect to databases, APIs, other applications, and processes. If your integration architecture is weak, AI amplifies that weakness. A compromised API connection can inject malicious training data. Poor API governance means audit trails disappear. Without strong integration controls, AI becomes a vector for lateral movement through your entire technology stack.
What Actually Works
Start with governance before deployment. Define which data AI systems can access, under what conditions, and with what approval gates. Implement data lineage tracking so you know exactly what went into each model and where the output is used. Build continuous monitoring for model behaviour, not just infrastructure monitoring. Require explicit user consent when AI is making decisions. Test adversarial inputs before going live.
